Balanitis

Balanitis is an inflammation of the head of the penis which can cause redness, irritation and soreness. It can affect men and boys of any age, but is particularly common in boys under the age of 5 and those men who have not been circumcised. Causes of balanitis

Balanitis can be caused by a number of factors, including poor hygiene, bacterial infections and skin irritants such as certain soaps or shower gels. Other causes can include:

• A sexually transmitted infection
• A skin condition such as psoriasis or eczema
• Thrush

Symptoms of balanitis

The main symptoms of balanitis are redness, irritation and soreness at the head of the penis. Other symptoms can include:

• Pain when urinating
• Itching or irritation around the area
• An unpleasant smell
• Swelling
• Thick fluid build-up around the foreskin
